Semantic Search at The Met

I'm very proud to announce the release of semantic search for The Met's Collection. You can read an introduction to our work on Perspectives: "Introducing Semantic Search at The Met" by Lead Product Designer Julie Turgeon and me. I'll be publishing a more technical article soon on EmTech at The Met. Although we're not open-sourcing the code, I've put together The Met Search Lab, which allows you to experiment with Elasticsearch-based hybrid search parameters and includes an About page describing our approach in enough detail for others to compare and adapt it.

I welcome you to search the Collection for semantic queries like "squiggly black lines", “reading a book by candlelight”, and my personal favorite, "person looking into a mirror".
